lives in the city of Montevideo since 1985. Specialized in ship models, he
was a cooperative leader in Salto up to 1969, when he suffered the imprisonment
like political prisoner of the Uruguayan military dictatorship until 1985.
Not belonging to the marine profession, AG was , nevertheless, hooked by the
enchanted job of the model ships, influenced, since his childhood, by the
coexistence with the routines and the tasks of the old shipyards of the Rio
Uruguay. His inclination towards the model ships, was improved during the
years of imprisonment, when in spite of the lack of material and tools, managed
to develop techniques that allowed him to make up for the deficiencies of
the forced confinement. The artistic works made by those days are unique and
have been acquired or given as gifts all over the world. The raw materials
are different kinds of wood, molded by a unique technique, that allows to
achieve the shape that the model requires. Even, the use of toothpicks in
the assembly of the models, has been a technique developed by AG with refined
minutiae and completion, to the point to obtain the enthusiastic recognition
of his peers within his country and in many other parts of the world. At the
same time, he got more deeply into new techniques of assemble and became an
expert in entirely hand made models , with remarkable precision of scale and
of the best craftmanship quality. Member of the Uruguayan Association of Craftsmen,
G is one of the founders of the legendary “Mercado de los Artesanos
de la Ciudad Vieja de Montevideo”, precursor of the present markets
of craftsmen in the Rio de la Plata area.
